The Waterhole

The Waterhole is a website that highlights water protection issues in Ontario. It hosts a wide range of information, including detailed documents aimed at public interest groups to tips for saving water at home or at the cottage. It is a collaborative project of the of Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) and Environmental Defence.

In November 2009, Blackfly was hired to host and upgrade the site to Drupal 6. However, when discussing needs with the client, it became apparent that the current site was not adequate to meet their priorities and was not reaching the targeted users.

The re-development goal was extended to include redesigning the user experience of the site - particularly to make the purpose of the site clearer and to highlight resources that were hidden in the current site, as well as to make it simpler to maintain. To achieve this we:

• Re-organized content and imported content from a sister site, so there was little need for new content development
• Modernized the design, but kept costs low by adapting a professionally templated design.
• Set up the admistration component, so all the current content was easy to update, and it was straightforward to add new information.
